Signing up for a library card is easy! We just need a few things:
- Come in person to your local library branch in Stevens Point, Plover, Rosholt, or Almond
- Bring a photo identification (ID)
- If that ID doesn’t show your current Wisconsin address, bring something that does (see below for details)
- Children (ages 0-15) must be registered in-person by their parent(s) or legal guardian(s)
Please note: You may already have a library card you can use here! If you have a valid library card from one of these counties (Adams, Columbia, Dane, Green, Sauk, and Wood), there is a good chance you can use the Portage County Public Library (PCPL) with the same card. Village of Amherst residents can either obtain a PCPL card or use their Amherst library card from the Lettie Jensen Library.
Apply for a library card online:
- Complete the online form.
- We will email you with your new library card number, which will provide you with access to Wisconsin's Digital Library (e-books) and other online services. Non-Portage County residents may need to use their home library card to access online services.
- Bring in a photo ID and proof of address (if it is not listed on your photo ID) to pick up your new card.
Acceptable forms of ID:
- Current Driver’s License

- Electronic forms of these documents may be accepted at library staff members’ discretion
Types of Library Cards
- Juvenile: Parents and legal guardians can get library cards for their children or wards (ages 0-17) by providing their valid library card or photo ID + proof of address. Both the parent/guardian and the child must be present. Grandparents, aunts/uncles, etc. cannot sign up children for library cards unless they are the legal guardian(s). Juveniles ages 16-17 can also sign up for library cards on their own if they present photo ID and proof of address. Allows checkout of all digital and physical items; parents/guardians are responsible for determining what material is appropriate for their minor dependents.
- Adult: Any Wisconsin resident ages 18-64 can apply for this standard library card, which allows checkout of all digital and physical items.
- Senior: Patrons 65 years of age or older can opt in to Senior status, which means there are no overdue fees for items borrowed through PCPL. Charges still apply for lost/damaged items as well as overdues charged on Inter-Library Loan items. Allows checkout of all digital and physical items.
- Limited Use: Patrons residing at certain semi-permanent addresses or having special circumstances may be issued a Limited Use card. This allows checkout of up to 3 books, CDs, or DVDs at a time and the placing of 2 holds at a time on physical items. (No checkout of audiobooks, games, or Library of Things items.) Allows full access to digital resources.
- Web-Use Only: Patrons who register online or who do not have a permanent address will be issued a Web-Use Only card, which provides full access to digital resources.
All visitors are always allowed full use of library materials while in the building (subject to our policies).
